There were issues that occurred with some WD hard drives, mainly the 500 and 750GB BPVT models, but there have not been any issues with more recent SATA 3G/6G drives or drives which use the new Advanced Format 4k sectors, indicating this may have been resolved in a firmware update, or may have just been a general incompatiblity with those specific drives.

If you’re looking to go the purely digital route on your new PS4 console, 500GB will go a long way before you’ll start having to make some tough choices.
